How is broadband light different than Intense Pulsed Light and lasers?

You can think of BBL as the new and improved version of IPL. Intense pulsed light has been known for delivering a wider bandwidth of light energy than lasers, which deliver a single wavelength. That only allows laser energy to penetrate the skin to a fixed depth to match the wavelength. Lasers can penetrate more deeply, but they also have the downside of creating more discomfort and downtime. Because BBL delivers different wavelengths, it can be used to perform several different types of treatments (photo rejuvenation, skin tightening, acne therapy, and hair removal).

When compared directly with IPL, Sciton’s new BBL HERO® provides stronger energy levels, which equate to higher levels of rejuvenation and the other attributes of the intended treatments.

How does BBL HERO work?

HERO’s broadband light is broad-spectrum photothermal energy. When delivered, this energy is absorbed by the brown pigment (melanin) in the skin and the hemoglobin in blood vessels that cause redness.

As the upper layers of the skin absorb the heat and energy from the broadband light, pigmented cells are destroyed and superficial blood vessels in the treated area are closed off.

The particles of any remaining brown pigment peel or slough off within 7 to 14 days. Over the next several weeks, the body continues to absorb remnants of the destroyed blood vessels.

The BBL energy and heat also trigger the desired wound-healing response in the dermis, where the body responds by initiating production of new supplies of collagen and elastin to “heal” the perceived wounds, although there aren’t any actual wounds. This improves the skin from beneath for a period of months after treatments.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare for a Forever Young BBL treatment?

woman smiling | Forever Young BBLTo achieve the best results, we advise our patients to do these things prior to their Forever Young BBL treatment:

  • Avoiding waxing the areas to be treated.
  • Avoid use of topical skin care on those areas that contains retinol or glycolic acid.
  • Don’t have a chemical peel for a few weeks prior to your session.
  • Avoid sun tanning or exposure for one month prior, so your skin loses any tanned skin.
  • Tell us if you’re prone to cold sores, as we will prescribe an antiviral medication to take for five days before your Forever Young session.

How long will it take to see results with Forever Young BBL?

Your areas of pigmentation will darken very quickly, usually within the next day. This can be disconcerting, but it’s actually a good thing. The darkening is a sign that the melanin in your skin responsible for your age spots and darker patches has absorbed the broadband light energy and is reacting. Over the next week or so, age spots will begin to slough off. This will lighten or fully remove these areas of hyperpigmentation.

Vascular lesions such as cherry angiomas, rosacea, and broken capillaries respond immediately, as the BBL energy heats the walls of the capillaries, and they then collapse. This closes off the vessels. The body then begins the process of scavenging and removing them over the next 2 to 4 weeks.

Is the Forever Young BBL treatment painful?

HERO® BBL platform (including Forever Young BBL) uses broad-spectrum visible and infrared light to selectively heat layers of the skin, getting rid of undesired pigmentation, redness, and various signs of aging. These are completely non-invasive treatments that don’t require topical numbing prior to your session or any recovery after.

The key is the HERO’s precision cooling. Sciton has built an integrated, thermoelectrically cooled, sapphire crystal that keeps the treatment area consistently safe and cool. When you come in for your Forever Young BBL treatment at our LBJ Freeway offices, we can precisely control the cooling in relation to the energy level applied, allowing a range of cooling from 0 – 30°C in 1°C increments. The HERO® system closely monitors the patient’s skin temperature during every second of treatment, ensuring complete patient comfort and safety.

Is there recovery after a Forever Young BBL treatment?

There isn’t any downtime or recovery. Your skin may have some redness across the treatment areas, but this usually passes within a day or two. You can return to work or your normal activities immediately.

Your skin will have temporarily lost some of its sun protection with this BBL treatment, so for at least two weeks you should avoid sun exposure and wear nothing less than 30 SPF sunscreen.
