What are the Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery?

Having breast reduction surgery can be one of the best decisions a woman ever makes. The procedure has physical, cosmetic, and emotional benefits that can last a lifetime.

On a physical level, the benefits of breast reduction surgery include the elimination of friction and skin irritation in the inframammary crease and a marked reduction of neck, shoulder, and back pain caused by the weight on the chest. On a cosmetic level, the benefits of breast reduction can include being able to wear clothing that feels more like you without garnering unwanted attention or a poor fit. Cosmetically, too, reducing breast size can vastly improve your appearance and physical proportions. Emotionally, well, you probably know that you may feel immensely more comfortable without stares or unwanted comments from others!

Should I Have Breast Reduction Surgery?

You are the one and only person who can answer whether or not you should have breast reduction surgery. Your appearance and physical comfort are very personal matters, so the decision should be all yours to make. Some women with enlarged breasts love the way they look and feel. If you do, then no other input matters.

If, on the other hand, you find your breast size to be more cumbersome than rewarding, there is value in consulting with an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. Here, you can expect to receive only the information you need to make a confident decision for yourself about how to move forward.

Is Getting a Lift Part of a Breast Reduction?

It is most likely that your breast reduction will include a lift. The reason is that, once excess fatty tissue is removed, the overlying skin may fit more loosely over the smaller breast mound. Furthermore, the effects of having enlarged breasts could be that your skin and connective tissue have stretched and your areolas and nipples would sit too low on the new breast mound to look good. Excising some of the skin that covers the breasts repositions all structures, resulting in smaller, perkier breasts.

Why Do I Need Liposuction for a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction procedures may involve liposuction as a way to expedite the removal of excess fatty tissue. Dr. Walker will discuss the details of your procedure during your consultation, after you've had the opportunity to discuss your concerns and goals. Liposuction is usually only one part of the entire procedure. It is followed by the careful reshaping of the breasts through meticulous tissue excision.

Will there be a Loss of Sensation with a Breast Reduction?

There may be a change in sensation in the nipples or skin of the breasts after the reduction procedure. This could include a loss of sensation or possibly increased sensitivity. It's also possible that there will be no change in the sensation of breast tissue as a result of surgery. In most cases where sensitivity either increases or decreases, the change is temporary. As tissue and nerve endings heal over the course of about three months, sensation should return to normal.

Will Insurance Cover the Cost of Breast Reduction Surgery?

In many cases, breast reduction is seen as a cosmetic procedure. As such, it is not covered by medical insurance. That said, if you believe that your breast reduction may be medically necessary, contact your insurance provider directly. They can discuss with you the criteria that are required to prove medical necessity. This usually includes documentation from at least one physician. Even with documentation, the insurance company may not approve coverage for the procedure.

How Does Breast Reduction Surgery Affect Pregnancy?

Having breast reduction surgery before pregnancy is a possibility. It's important to talk to your surgeon about your future plans as they pertain to having children. There should be sufficient time in between surgery and conception for the breast to completely heal so their inevitable growth due to hormones and milk production does not cause unwanted scarring or complications.

While it is very likely that the reduced breasts will enlarge again during pregnancy and afterward if you breastfeed, it's also likely that they will return to normal once your hormone levels even out (after breastfeeding). And on the topic of breastfeeding, it is also important to note that there is a chance that this breast surgery could impair milk production. This can occur despite the care that your doctor takes with your procedure.

If you're interested in having a breast reduction and also think you may have children in the future, schedule a consultation! A discussion with Dr. Walker can provide you with the information you need to decide what's best for you.

What Happens During a Breast Reduction?

The surgical incisions are identical to a breast lift, however, with a reduction, a significant amount of breast tissue is removed in addition to the skin. This procedure almost never requires removal of the nipple, just repositioning, and in most cases sensation and function remain intact.
