Losing a significant amount of weight is a wonderful accomplishment. However, without this weight, many are left with excess, sagging skin. This happens because carrying large amounts of weight for an extended period of time damages the collagen and elastin fibers of the skin, making it difficult for them to return to their original state. Body contouring surgery is a set of cosmetic procedures aimed to lift and reshape the skin and body after massive weight loss. What is Body Contouring Surgery?
Often referred to as body sculpting, body contouring is a procedure that reshapes, lifts, and tightens targeted regions on the body, such as the abdomen, thighs, arms, and more. This procedure removes excess fat, tightens loose skin from excess weight loss, and even reshapes the area. There are a few different body contouring surgeries, including tummy tucks and bariatric surgery. The area your surgery targets will be specific to your body and goals.
Who Is a Candidate for Body Contouring?
The ideal candidate for body contouring is patients who:
- Have undergone a large amount of weight loss
- Have stabilized their weight loss
- Are generally healthy (nonsmokers, eat healthily, take care of their body, have no pre-existing health conditions, etc.)
- Have a BMI of 30 or less
The reason behind these qualifications is that body contouring is more effective for those who meet these standards. The best way to determine if you are a candidate for body contouring is by speaking with Dr. Walker. She will be able to look at your current health and evaluate your needs to determine how effective body contouring will be for you.
Benefits of Body Contouring
The benefits of body contouring go beyond just a physical transformation. With this procedure, you can expect to see improved self-confidence and enhanced quality of life. It can also help alleviate back pain that often comes with carrying extra weight. Additionally, it helps create the appearance of firmer skin and can even reduce visible signs of aging.
After having and nursing 3 babies in 6 years 👦🏻👦🏻👩🏻, Dr. Walker fixed my poor body! She is a phenomenal surgeon and I feel like she genuinely cares for me. The Mommy Makeover surgery can be scary and expensive, and it was important to me to go into this journey with confidence. The recovery was tough but very doable with her support, and I’m really happy with my results. This was a life changing surgery that will allow me to have that confidence and pep in my step for the rest of my life that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. In fact I like my body now even more than I did before babies. This is my one life and my one body, and I’m looking forward to good times ahead! Thank you Dr. Walker! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 - Lauren B.
Total Body Contouring Procedure
Dr. Walker performs most procedures in her accredited office based surgery center. Using only board certified M.D. anesthesiologists for patient safety and comfort allows her to focus completely on the artistic details of sculpting and reshaping your new look. Safety must always remain the number one priority. We usually limit office surgery to around five hours but carefully evaluate each individuals health and home support for outpatient surgery. Since most procedures can be performed within this time, the majority of our patients are eligible for the privacy and convenience of our office based surgery center. Nonetheless, we require hospital surgery and an overnight stay if there are any special concerns or medical considerations.
The total body contouring procedure is done in multiple visits and Dr. Walker will discuss a personalized plan with you during your consultaiton.
Mommy Makeover usually involves an analysis of the arms, breasts, abdomen, hips and thighs. Available procedures can be planned in a multitude of combinations and include several variations of breast reduction, reshaping or enlargement, abdominoplasty, liposuction and lower body lifts to tighten the thighs and buttocks.
Recovery after Body Contouring Surgery
Recovery for most procedures can be as little as 2-4 days for liposuction and breast surgery and two or more weeks for more extensive procedures, including tummy tucks. You can also learn more about pain management options here.
