How Do Plastic Surgeons Use Facial Implants?

Plastic surgeons use facial implants to improve and enhance facial contours. Frequently, these implants will help provide a more harmonious balance to your face and features so that you may feel better about how you look. There are many implants available, manufactured from a variety of materials. They may strengthen a jawline or bring the chin or cheekbones into balance with the rest of the face.

Are Facial Implants Right For You?

Facial implants can enhance your appearance and may bolster your self esteem. If you are looking for improvement, not perfection, in your appearance and are realistic in your expectations, you may find that a facial implant is the right choice for you. Plastic surgeons will frequently use such implants to bring better balance to the features of a younger patient. The more mature patient may choose to have an implant placed in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure. For example, during a facelift, a patient may wish to have implants placed over the cheekbones to help restore a more youthful appearance. Implants may also be selected to fill out a face that appears “sunken” or tired.

Chin Implant Surgery Procedure

Insertion of a chin implant may take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. During the procedure, the surgeon selects the proper size and shape of the implant to enhance your appearance and inserts it into a pocket over the front of the jawbone. The small incision to create the pocket and insert the implant is placed inside the mouth (inside the lower lip) or in the skin just under the chin area. Your chin implant procedure may be performed under general or local anesthesia, depending on your comfort level.

Usually, the chin is taped after surgery to minimize swelling and discomfort. Sutures in the skin will be removed in five to seven days. If an intra-oral incision is used, the sutures will dissolve.

How is Cheek Implant Surgery performed?

Cheek implant surgery usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes. When cheek implants are being place in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure, such as a facelift, forehead lift, or eyelid surgery, the implants may be inserted through the incisions made for those procedures. Otherwise, an incision will be made either inside your upper lip or your lower eyelid. A pocket is then formed and an implant is inserted.

Lower-Jaw Surgery

Insertion of a jaw implant usually takes about one to two hours, depending on the details of your treatment needs. This process is done under local anesthesia, and you'll be completely asleep for the entire procedure. Internal incisions are made on either side of the lower lip to provide access for creating a pocket into which the lower jaw implant can be inserted. Dissolving sutures are used to close the incisions. Prior to your procedure, we'll work with you to help you understand what you can expect from scars after your surgery.

Who Is the Ideal Candidate for Chin Implants?

Chin implants are ideal for patients who are in overall good health and want to improve the appearance of their chin by reconstructing the chin after trauma or by altering its appearance to achieve facial balancing, definition, and contouring. To qualify as a candidate, patients should be in overall good health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations regarding the results of their chin implants.

How Much Do Chin Implants Cost?

The average cost of the chin implant procedure can range between $4,500 to $6,000 in the Dallas, TX region. However, the total pricing of your procedure may differ depending on the size of the treated area, the number of implants, your surgeon’s fee, location, medication, and other medical expenses.

At the Plastic Surgery Center of Dallas, we are happy to work with each patient to come up with financing options that help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

Are Chin Implants Covered by Insurance?

Because chin augmentation is often performed for cosmetic purposes, most insurance companies do not cover this procedure. However, we recommend contacting your primary health insurance provider to verify if you are able to receive any coverage for chin implants.

What Is Recovery from Chin Implants Like?

On average, patients who undergo the chin implant procedure will achieve a full recovery within eight weeks. However, many patients can return back to their normal routine within seven days of their procedure.

In the first few days after your procedure, you may experience bruising, swelling, tenderness, and pain. However, these side effects are common and typically disappear within several days.

For at least four weeks, avoid rigorous physical activity such as heavy lifting or bending over. During your healing period, it is important to follow Dr. Walker’s aftercare guidelines to avoid complications during recovery.

What Are the Benefits of Chin Implants?

Chin implants can provide a number of benefits to patients, including a more proportional, balanced look to the face, a more prominent and contoured jawline, a restoration of lost volume in the chin area, as well as an increase in self-confidence.

What Is Recovery Like from Facial Augmentation Surgery?

Remember, with any facial surgery, you may feel and look better in a short period of time. However, it may not be advisable to participate in certain activities — especially activities that may result in the face being jarred or bumped–for several weeks.

Your surgeon will work with you to provide a recovery plan after your surgery. In the event that you're not sure whether you can participate in a certain activity, don't hesitate to reach out. It's our job to help you through every step of the healing process, from start to finish.

In the event that you sustain an injury that bumps your chin, give us a call so that we can evaluate if you need treatment.

Results After Facial Implant Surgery

You may not be able to accurately evaluate your appearance for weeks or perhaps even months. Give yourself plenty of time to get used to your new look. At your follow-up appointments, you'll be able to chat with Dr. Walker about your healing process.
