Vertical bands in the neck can appear even in patients who are otherwise happy with their skin, and they don't require surgery to improve.
What Causes Neck Bands?
Neck bands, also called platysmal bands, form when the platysma muscle beneath the skin becomes more prominent, often due to muscle tension, repeated movement, or a natural loss of skin elasticity over time. These bands typically become more visible with age, though some patients notice them earlier due to genetics or the way their neck muscles naturally engage during everyday expression and movement. Unlike loose or sagging skin, neck bands are primarily a muscular concern, which is why they often respond well to treatments that target muscle activity directly, rather than skin tightening alone. Some patients notice their bands most when speaking, smiling, or looking down, while others see them even at rest, which can influence which treatment approach will be most effective.
