Chemical Peels
The New Chemical Peels Can Diminish Wrinkles, Patchiness,
and Superficial Acne Scars!
Got a free lunch hour? Suddenly, the glycolic chemical peel -
a once obscure dermtologic procedure - is becoming routine in
dermatology and plastic surgery offices around the country.
Both men and women are making the "lunch-time" peel a very
popular procedure.
Many people who would not choose to have cosmetic surgery,
are electing to make use of the Topix glycolic acid peel
that is offered in this office. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), or
"fruit acids" are naturally occurring substances found in
common foods, such as in sugar cane (ie. Glycolic acids), sour
milk (ie. Lactic acids", grapes, apples, and citrus fruit (ie.
Citric acids). Gycolic acid dislodges or dissolves the
cellular "glue" that clumps dead skin cells together. It is
the dead cell buildup that contributes to the many skin
problems and conditions we see in this office. Scientific
studies suggest that the smallest molecular size of the
Glycolic acid is precisely what makes its penetration
potential superior to its fruit acid siblings.
Peels work on a simple premise. A chemical solution is
applied to skin that is wrinkled, scarred, sun-damaged, or
otherwise pigmented. This solution causes several of the top
layers of skin to dry up and to peel off over a period of
several days. When the old layer has peeled off, it exposes a
new layer of undamaged skin which has a smoother, younger,
more even-looking appearance.
There are several kinds of peels ranging from "mild"
glycolic acid peels, which will remove the top layers of skin,
to medium-strength and deep peels. Mild peels tingle and
sting, but they are
NOT associated with having to take any time off from work. Affecting
only the most superficial layers, they brighten dull complexions and leave
skin feeling smoother, but the difference is subtle: makeup glides on more
easily; your skin looks more refreshed; sun damaged areas are lightened;
acne scars are less visible. Research conducted by Lawrence Moy, M.D.,
clinical instructor at UCLA, suggests a series of five to
seven applications of of the mild glycolic acid peels in order
to achieve the best results and it may actually encourage the
production of collagen in the dermis, visibly firming sagging
skin. Practitioners clam these benefits will last for years -
as long as an at-home maintenance program of glycolic acid
products is continued. The main advantage of the Topix Glycolic peel over the medium-strength TCA peels and phenol deep
peels is the lack of "down-time". The TCA and phenol peels are similar
procedures, except sedatives and antibiotics are usually administered
because of the pain and risk of infection. Dermatologists report that most
patients remain at home for at least a week after these stronger peels
because of the reddening, flaking, even blistering that can last up to 10
days. The discomfort from the Topix Glycolic peel is very minor yet you
will notice results. "MINIMAL IRRITATION" combined with
maximum results over a course of therapy.
If you are considering a chemical peel, approach it as you would any
medical procedure - be informed about the risks and be realistic about the
benefits. Please feel free to ask for more details when coming in for a
visit.
