Liposuction (see also Abdominoplasty or "Tummy Tuck")

Liposuction removes troublesome, diet-resistant collections of fat to reshape your body. Individuals can exercise and reduce body fat yet still find themselves with the same stubborn bulges. Liposuction can permanently recontour annoying areas of localized fat. A recontoured body can still gain weight but usually very little in the treated areas, since those cells have been permanently removed.

The fat is pretreated and softened with a “wetting solution” which facilitates the removal of unwanted fat. We use the “superwet” technique. This is safer and more predictable than “tumescent liposuction” which had some problems with safety from volume overload. We do not perform extremely high volume liposuction since these are the cases which more often result in poor results and excessive risk. Liposuction works best for smoothing out unwanted bulges and is not promoted or intended as a method for significant weight reduction. Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL) is a more recent development in body contouring and allows us to soften fat before removal. This affords more complete removal and perhaps better results with higher volumes, or areas of denser fat.These areas especially include the upper abdomen, male breasts, and "lovehandles," as well as areas which have had previous liposuction and may benefit from additional contouring.

A compression garment is worn for up to six weeks to reduce the bruising and swelling that occurs during the first few weeks after surgery. Usually after the first week, a patient can see and feel their new contour even though some  swelling is still apparent. The most requested areas for liposuction for women are abdomen, thighs, hips, and knees while for men most often request "lovehandles", abdomen and breasts.  Properly performed, liposuction is an affordable, low risk and rapid recovery procedure. If the skin is too loose, liposuction may result in sagging or bunching of the skin. Loose muscles after childbirth may also result in persistent bulging, despite through liposuction. In this case, Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck is required to tighten the skin and muscles, and flatten the abdomen.  Abdominoplasty is a more extensive procedure. Recovery is longer, but the results are more dramatic, if skin and muscles are too lax for liposuction.

If you have decided to have liposuction, now is the perfect time to consider "plumping up" your lips, scars, or the folds located on either side of the nose. Fat taken from the liposuctioned area can be injected (fat grafted) to many areas. Lips are the most requested areas to be enhanced using this method. Fat offers a natural feel and movement but a variable amount of the fat transferred will be reabsorbed. Individual results vary. We do not consider fat grafting a permanent solution from a single treatment however permanent results are often seen with a series of treatments.
