Laser
Tattoo Removal
The laser treatment of tattoos represents
the most efficient method of lightening and
hopefully, removing unwanted tattoos. The
many different colors of ink and the quality
of tattoos varies tremendously with
different depths and types of pigments. Each
of these differences makes the laser
treatment of tattoos somewhat variable from
one individual to the next. A laser’s energy
passes through tissues without tattoo
pigment and is absorbed by the areas of
pigmentation, releasing energy which
disrupts the particles of pigment and allows
them to be carried away by normal cellular
activities. Different settings on the laser
react with different pigment colors to cause
their disruption and some colors are more
susceptible than others to treatment with
laser.
While the results are variable, the best
treatment results appear to be obtained with
tattoos which are darkest in color. With
each treatment of the laser, pigment
particles are shattered into sizes small
enough to be carried away by tiny cells and
the tattoo lightens to a variable degree. It
would be most unusual for a tattoo to be
completely eliminated with one treatment. As
a rule each subsequent treatment removes
more and more of the tattoo’s pigment,
making the tattoo less and less visible as
treatments progress. Generally, to get the
most optimal results, a period of 4-6 weeks
should be allowed between laser treatment of
tattoos to allow the maximum cellular
removal of pigment following each treatment.
The Versa Pulse laser is probably the most
effective for treatment of tattoos. It
offers 3 separate laser wavelengths for the
treatment of all tattoo colors. For reasons
which we do not completely understand some
patients respond better than others, however
the majority of individuals will show either
a greatly decreased visibility of the tattoo
or near complete elimination of the areas of
treatment. It is not uncommon to see some
residual irregularity in color, either a
slight residual pigment color or a
lightening of the skin in the area of the
tattoo.
