Facelift/Browlift/Eyelift - Men
As we age, it's common to wish for a more youthful
appearance. A younger appearance can be achieved without
surgery using Botox and injectables, such as Restylane, or
through surgery such as blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery),
browlift, facelift or laser resurfacing. Laser works best for
fine lines, sun damage, skin irregularity and mild laxity of
the cheeks. Laser resurfacing involves peeling away the aged
superficial layers of skin, revealing a smooth inner layer.
Many patients choose to laser resurface just the eye area or
lip area for "lipstick lines" during their facelift.
While the laser works nicely on many fines lines, only a
facelift will correct a sagging neck, jowls and severely loose
facial skin. Many times the two procedures are combined. The
modern facelift will tighten loose skin as well as re-support
the internal fat and muscles which sag with time. It can also
tighten loose neck skin, sculpt away neck fat and improve the
bands which are seen in an aging neck. A facelift addresses
the lower two-thirds of the face while eyelid surgery and
browlift address the eyes and forehead. Eyelid surgery and
browlifts are commonly performed with a facelift.
There are several incisions which can be used for a
facelift and the choice depends on the preexisting skin lines,
wrinkles and hair pattern as well as beard pattern in men.
Sometimes the incision curves along the hairline and sometimes
part of the incision is hidden in the scalp. The
incision may curve in front of the ear or go inside it (retrotragal).
Consultation for facelifting is very detailed to choose the
best options for each individual.
Browlift
As a normal part of ageing, the forehead relaxes and the
eyebrows descend. As a result, the upper eyelids begin
to rest on the eyelashes and the skin folds appear more
prominent. A tired or stern look may be seen even when you're
in a good mood. Blepharoplasty can improve this by
simple skin removal, but a browlift may be a better solution
in many cases. During a browlift the forehead skin is freed
up to allow it to be lifted vertically and the muscle which
causes scowling is partially thinned out to soften the frown
lines. Brow lift corrects the upper eyelid skin excess,
brow wrinkles and the eyebrow position. Usually the
result is a much happier expression in addition to a more
rested appearance. The tissues can be freed up in such a
manner as to allow a significant amount of elevation of the
cheeks too, and for the late thirty to early forty-something
patient this can mean a significantly younger appearance with
virtually undetectable incisions. Browlifts can be performed
by three different methods: endoscopically; via a
hairline incision which does not elevate the hairline; and the
coronal approach which allows the incisions to be completely
hidden in your hair. Individual variations in anatomy as
well as goals help guide the decision regarding which approach
is best. Eyelift or Blepharoplasty
Aesthetic eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is an
operation to remove excess skin and fat on upper and lower
eyelids. It can eliminate conditions that give an
individual a tired appearance, such as wrinkled folds of skin
on upper eyelids, bags under the eyes and sagging eyebrows.
Reconstructive blepharoplasty can be performed to correct
these conditions when they affect vision. In younger
individuals, blepharoplasty usually is performed to remove
fatty tissue only. In older patients, loss of skin tone
will require excision of superfluous skin as well. it is
important that ocular problems that impeded vision or tear
formation are recognized before surgery. These
conditions may need to be corrected by an ophthalmologist
prior to eyelid surgery or, in some cases, can be modified
during the blepharoplasty operation.
Blepharoplasy typically is performed to remove excess folds
of skin, ouches under the eyes and in some instances, is
accompanied by an additional procedure to correct sagging
eyebrows. One or all of these changes can be made during
a single operation. The extent of the procedure depends
on what changes are desired and what is deemed appropriate.
Blepharoplasty usually is performed first on the upper lid
and then the lower. In both areas, underlying
compartments of fat will be removed. Incisions in the
upper and lower eyelids are made following natural lines and
crease, and generally extend into the fine wrinkling, or
crow's feet, at the eyes' outer edge. Working through
the incisions, the skin is separated from underlying fatty
tissue and muscle and if indicated the underlying muscle may
be tightened. Exposed fat and excess skin are
removed. Current trends involve much more conservative fat
removal since muscle tightening often reduces the bags and
avoids hollowing of the lower eyelids. The number and type of sutures used to close the
incisions vary. Once healed, the hairline scar will fade
and become barely visible within six to eight weeks.
