What is a Mommy Makeover?

Mommy Makeover Featured Case

The Mommy Makeover process is a combination of two or more techniques performed to revitalize a woman’s body. The purpose of the personalized Mommy Makeover is to address the regions of the body that have been affected by pregnancy and nursing in one comprehensive treatment plan. Using her cultivated skills as a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Walker customizes care to address each patient’s areas of concern precisely and beautifully. She understands that, while many women share similar goals for their makeover, each will differ slightly in the details pertaining to anatomy, personality, and lifestyle.

What Are the Common Areas of Concern Targeted in Mommy Makeover Surgery?

A Mommy Makeover generally focuses on the areas of the body that change during and after pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing. Common concerns include:

  • Breast sagging
  • Loss of breast volume and shape
  • Abdominal laxity
  • Abdominal protrusion or drooping
  • Stretch marks
  • Excess fat in the abdominal area, thighs, hips, or other areas

Every Mommy Makeover is unique. Most take place in a single surgery, but this may vary based on individual circumstances. Dr. Walker elaborates on her customized treatment recommendations for each patient after a thorough consultation and physical examination.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for Mommy Makeover Surgery?

Healthy women interested in improving the shape of their bodies are often good candidates for Mommy Makeover treatment. Contrary to the suggestion made by the name, a Mommy Makeover can be performed on any woman whether she has been affected by pregnancy and nursing or not. You may be a good candidate for this series of procedures if you:

  • Do not smoke. Smoking inhibits optimal tissue healing.
  • Are at a stable weight that you are happy with. A Mommy Makeover does not have to reinstate your pre-pregnancy body; it can bring out the very best in your unique shape.
  • Are generally healthy and keep good diet and exercise habits.
  • Have completed your family. Surgeons generally recommend scheduling a Mommy Makeover after a patient has had all of the children she intends to have. This prevents disruption to the new shape by a subsequent pregnancy.
  • Have support for your recovery period. Recovery from a Mommy Makeover can take 6 to 8 weeks. It is essential to have adequate support at home so you do not do too much too soon.

Mommy Makeover Surgery Procedure

Dr. Walker performs most procedures in her accredited office based surgery center. Using only board certified M.D. anesthesiologists for patient safety and comfort allows her to focus completely on the artistic details of sculpting and reshaping your new look. Safety must always remain the number one priority. We usually limit office surgery

to around five hours but carefully evaluate each individuals health and home support for outpatient surgery. Since most procedures can be performed within this time, the majority of our patients are eligible for the privacy and convenience of our office based surgery center. Nonetheless, we require hospital surgery and an overnight stay if there are any special concerns or medical considerations.

Mommy Makeover usually involves an analysis of the arms, breasts, abdomen, hips and thighs. Available procedures can be planned in a multitude of combinations and include several variations of breast reduction, reshaping or enlargement, abdominoplasty, liposuction and lower body lifts to tighten the thighs and buttocks. Recovery for most procedures can be as little as 2-4 days for liposuction and breast surgery and 2 or more weeks for more extensive procedures including tummy tucks.

What Procedures Are Included in a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover can include a number of different procedures. Common techniques typically revolve around the breasts and body. These include:

Breast Augmentation

Breastfeeding offers significant advantages to mother and child. However, this practice can also deplete the breasts of volume and shape. Breast augmentation restores volume to the breasts through the insertion of silicone or saline implants. These can be placed above or below the muscle. Dr. Walker recommends options based on a woman’s preferences and natural anatomy.

Breast Lift

During pregnancy and while breastfeeding, breast volume can increase substantially. The skin must stretch around the larger breast mounds and, as a result, may become stretched and loose. Breast sag can worsen after breastfeeding stops, exacerbating the appearance of volume loss and looseness. A breast lift is a procedure designed to reposition the breast tissue without enlarging the area with implants, resulting in more “perkiness.”

Breast Augmentation Plus Lift

Some women achieve the best results by combining breast augmentation with a breast lift. Doing so addresses several issues simultaneously. With breast augmentation and lift, you may improve breast volume, correct contour irregularities, and restore shape to this part of your body.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a minimally-invasive procedure that removes fatty deposits that have accumulated in a particular area. Fat often sticks in areas such as the abdomen, hips, flanks, thighs, legs, backs of the arms, and chin. Liposuction manually removes fat to smooth body contours.

Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is a tummy tuck, a procedure that repairs stretched skin and stretched or separated abdominal muscles. The tummy tuck is a popular surgical choice for women seeking a Mommy Makeover because it quickly and efficiently tightens the abdominal region while also reducing or eliminating stretch marks.

Liposuction Plus Abdominoplasty

Like the breasts, the abdominal region can change in multiple ways through pregnancy and aging. Combining liposuction with abdominoplasty is an ideal option for ultimate body contouring.

Ancillary Procedures and Treatments

Mommy Makeovers are generally focused on breast and body but they do not have to be limited to these areas. Dr. Walker personalizes each treatment plan to the individual. Some women include procedures such as an arm or thigh lift in their Mommy Makeover. Some include facial rejuvenation procedures, surgical or non-surgical, to fully integrate their personality into their look.

Advantages of Combining Procedures in a Mommy Makeover

The advantage of combining procedures in a mommy makeover is that recovery is usually the same as recovery for the “biggest” procedure, which is far less than the total down-time or risk if each procedure is performed independently.

What is Recovery After a Mommy Makeover Like?

Recovery after a Mommy Makeover is dependent on the combination of procedures performed. Each patient’s natural healing process also influences downtime. Patients can expect some degree of swelling and bruising, as well as discomforts such as soreness and tenderness, after their procedures. Side effects are managed with prescription medication, then over-the-counter medication, as they gradually subside over two or more weeks. It is important for Mommy Makeover patients to schedule adequate time off from work and most normal activities. It is necessary to avoid sports, exercise, strenuous activities, and lifting heavy objects for a time to ensure optimal healing.
